We have not raised our prices in 15 years. Some leak companies charge less up front but charge extra for patching small holes. Some new startups give the pool guys a $50 kickback for a referral raising your price to $275 and up. A solid referal does not mean what to used to. A referral that use to take years to achieve can be bought with google ad words and kickbacks to the pool guys.
I have always said it takes a guy 2 years experience to gain the confidence to find a pool leak efficiently. I say this because I have seen change in the industry and leak detectors are sprouting like daisies. The "one stop pool shop" now sends summer help out to your pool.
Unfortunately false promises in advertising are based on fine print: One local company boasts "if we cant find it, you don't pay" but in the fine print loosing 1/2" per day is normal evaporation! -which is not guaranteed-how misleading can you get? The truth is finding the small leaks is the hard part. An active hole the size of a pinhead will loose 1/4" per day. Most pools I look at loose 1/2" per day. So how much should a pool loose?
By now you have heard of the bucket test. Placing a 5 gallon pail on the pool steps to measure loss of water over a few days. This accounts for rain and evaporation. I often just look a the tile line and see if a dust line is present from day to day. Rain can wash the pollin particles off the tile but usually its right on target.

Heres some tips to help everyone solve this problem:
Turn off fountains and waterfalls for a few days and see if the pool holds water better. This fountain is known a a "sheer decent" and can be a major problem because the thin spout can be tough to pressure test. This is puplic enemy #1 because the flimsy plastic its made out of will crack under the deck. Other rock waterfalls can be impossible to test.

....No green pools please- Good visibility is a must because our divers need to visually inspect every inch of the pool. Sometimes a pool gets so bad that nothing can be done until the leak is fixed- let it drain untill it stops then call us.
Shut the pool off before we get there, calm still water helps us find leaks faster.
Dont wait till winter till call us. Call as soon as you sense a problem
